Mapping Cholera

Interactive Map Visualization
of London's 1854 Cholera Epidemic

Goals

Dr. John Snow created the iconic map of cholera outbreak in London's Broad Street, which was the origin of data visualization in numerous domains. As part of academic coursework, I was tasked with creating an interactive version of this map which would help someone conduct an investigation of this epidemic.

Solution

Insert link

A multi-visualization interactive map to give enough flexibility to answer as many possible questions towards the map. Instead of creating a dashboard for the time frame selection, an intuitive range selector along with a bar graph is used to convey more information easily to the user. Deaths have been coded by gender and on hover state display more detailed information. Upon range selection, deaths outside the range are displayed in light gray so as to maintain the context of the death areas and avoid memory load in user to carry information of deaths from each time span.
